Who Says Fifty-Something Is Old?

I know, almost everyone, but I beg to differ. Yes some things do not work as well as they once did. I ache a bit more? well a lot more. My good cholesterol or HDL is really good, over one hundred, but to keep it like that I have to walk a few miles several times a week. And in doing that, I?ve worn my left knee out! And I?m usually a little anemic, so to get those numbers up I have to eat some red meat; well there goes the bad Cholesterol or LDL up. How do you win? Here?s how. Attitude.

September is ?National Menopause Awareness Month? and I just want to share with you my thoughts on that! To me menopause simply means a ?pause? before the beginning of the rest of our wonderful lives, a slight interlude before getting cranked up to really live. Last year during my physical I was asked, ?Do you still have a period?? Well yes, I?m not menopausal yet, just perimenopausal! And then this year they didn?t even have the decency to ask, hey, what?s up with that? I might be fifty-something but I?m still? perimenopausal!

I refuse to stop living just because the years are piling up. God knows what he?s doing so just go with it. When you can?t keep up with the younger folks, sit, rest and watch the wind whiff through the trees. When was the last time you really looked around you? Sit down under a tree and glance up into its branches? Right now you?ll see the colors of autumn mingling with the green hues of summer. And there, look, a squirrel?s nest. Maybe you?ll see a hawk perched upon a limb, ever watching for his next meal. If he only stared straight ahead and never allowed his eyes to roam the land, he?d probably starve to death.

That?s kind of like getting older. If we stress over what we can?t do and don?t let ourselves look around for all the new stuff God has for us, then yes, we too will dry up, age, and our spirits will grow weary and life will lose it?s luster.

It?s taken me a long time to become the person I want to be, to feel comfortable in my own skin. To linger on the sagging, wrinkles, and faulty knees is counter-productive. There are too many things I can still do, so many doors yet to walk through, so much more to experience.

So remember, attitude is everything? Shoot Noah was 480 years old when God gave him the most important instructions of his life, and then it took him 120 years to build the ark. See, told you fifty-something isn?t very old!
